6/26/07 - Senate bill tackles federal cocaine sentencing disparity
Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah) and other Senate heavyhitters, including Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Arlen Specter (R-Penn.), introduced S. 1685, the Fairness in Drug Sentencing Act of 2007, a bill that tackles the federal cocaine sentencing disparity. Among other things, the bill would raise the quantity trigger for the five year mandatory minimum for crack cocaine offenses from 5 grams to 25 grams.
